At Music Therapy St. Louis we're always looking for engaging and fun ways to help children learn and grow. One of our go-to interventions for our younger clients is the ever-popular "Opposites Song"!
This simple yet effective song is a fantastic tool for teaching contrasting concepts, encouraging movement, and boosting language development – all within a joyful musical experience.
Why We Love the "Opposites Song":
Concrete Learning: It provides a clear and tangible way for young children to understand abstract concepts like big/small, fast/slow, and high/low by pairing them with actions and music.
Movement Integration: The song naturally lends itself to physical movements, making learning active and engaging. Kids can stretch tall, crouch down small, move quickly, and then slowly.
Language Development: It reinforces vocabulary related to opposites in a repetitive and memorable way.
Interactive Fun: It encourages participation and interaction, making it a wonderful group activity.
Versatility: The song can be adapted with different tempos, dynamics (loud/soft), and even different pairs of opposites.
Let's Get Singing!
"Opposites Song" Lyrics
"This is big, big, big.
This is small, small, small.
This is short, short, short.
This is tall, tall, tall.
This is fast, fast, fast.
This is slow, slow, slow.
This is high and this is low."
See it in Action!
Try it with Your Young Clients (or Little Ones at Home!)
We encourage you to try incorporating the "Opposites Song" into your interactions with young children!
Here are a few tips:
Model the Actions: Clearly demonstrate the corresponding movements for each opposite.
Encourage Participation: Invite children to move and sing along with you.
Use Visual Aids: Pictures or objects that represent the opposites can enhance understanding.
Vary the Tempo and Dynamics: Experiment with singing the song faster or slower, louder or softer, to further emphasize the contrasting concepts.
Make it Playful! Don't be afraid to be silly and have fun with it.
The "Opposites Song" is just one example of how music therapy utilizes the power of music to facilitate learning and development in young children. By engaging multiple senses and making learning fun, we can help them grasp new concepts and build essential skills.
